Those of us who live in ‘modern’ houses can still get that old-fashioned, traditional look in the bathroom by making clever design choices. The obvious items that will emphasise traditional looks are the freestanding roll-top bath, Victorian-style brassware and painted finish cabinetry.
1 – The Roll Top Bath
A roll-top bath, especially with visible standpipes, epitomises traditional bathroom style. Ideally, the bathroom should be spacious enough to allow the bath to be freestanding, although we do have back-to-wall design options for smaller rooms. This is our Abingdon Single-Ended design, available in 1500mm and 1700mm lengths. Complete the look with either Chrome or White ball feet. Painted timber panelling is a great option to pin down the classic look–be sure to choose bathroom-suitable paint.

2 – The Cassic Vanity Cabinet + Mirror
A traditionally styled bathroom includes classic painted cabinetry rather than shiny modern finishes. This is our Lucia Graphite GreyVanity with Brushed Brass accents, with an old-fashioned style ceramic basin with upstand. Here it’s been teamed with our striking Deco-style Thea Illuminated LED Mirror–so you’re getting classic looks with all the latest lighting details! We love this updated version of a traditional bathroom look.

3 – Old-Fashioned Overhead Shower
Victorian bathrooms sometimes had elaborate shower systems–with lots of brassware which always looked rather dramatic. Our more accessible and updated versions have all the latest contemporary features though, including long-lasting thermostatic valve technology to provide a constant and reliable temperature, an anti-scald safety feature and a convenient hand-held shower head. Our Lismore Round Thermostatic Rigid Shower set is shown here in a modern, high-quality polished chrome finish.

4 – A Slipper Bath
For simple, classic elegance, why not choose a slipper bath… perfect for reclining whilst thinking about your next design project! Traditional slipper-style baths can also be rather more elaborate, but our Westminster design is simple and streamlined, with a flush-to-the-floor design. This design, in Lucite acrylic, has an integrated waste and overflow. It’s designed to be used with wall-mounted or freestanding taps and is shown here with our Trent freestanding bath-shower mixer set.

5 – A Brass Towel Rail
A beautifully bold antique-style Gibraltar Brushed Brass Heated Towel Rail is a very good choice for a classic bathroom look. This looks rather striking standing against dark grey, blue or even black painted panelling–and will look just as lovely with some gorgeous white fluffy towels hanging on it! This is the 1200mm x 600mm size, and it’s also available in a chrome finish if you want to match it to existing chrome brassware in the bathroom.

6 – The Classic Bath-Shower Mixer Set
Traditionally styled brassware with white porcelain accents with black lettering is a very good way of emphasising classic style and traditional bathroom ideas. It’s deck-mounted so could be used to update an existing bath, and there are also brushed brass bath stoppers and overflow accessories available. Ceramic disc cartridges ensure smooth, leak-proof operation, and the shower hose is 1.5m long.

7 – Individual Hot + Cold Taps
We’re so used to seeing mixer taps these days that it could be considered rather a novelty to install separate hot and cold taps! Nonetheless, it’s the perfect way of styling your new bathroom in a very classic and traditional way. Our Nene Polished Chrome tap range includes mixer sets and bath filler too if you want to continue the theme. Shown here with our beautiful Hudson Traditional Pedestal Basin.

8 – Double Vanity with Washstand Style
This Bermuda Cashmere Pink double vanity has the look of a traditional marble-topped washstand. However, our contemporary basins don’t have to be filled with a jug of hot water heated over a range and carried upstairs! We love this tasteful modern version of traditional bathroom ideas, and the pale pink shade stands out very well against dark-painted panelled walls.

Transforming your modern bathroom into a traditional haven is easier than ever with these classic design ideas. From elegant roll top and slipper baths to timeless brassware and cabinetry, there are plenty of ways to achieve a beautifully nostalgic aesthetic with all the conveniences of modern technology.
