What Size Bath Do I Need? Best Baths for Large and Small Spaces

If you are designing a brand new bathroom, which includes replacing the bath, you will probably be thinking, “What size bath do I need?”. A standard length bath is 1700mm, with a more compact version coming in at 1500mm long. Our shortest bath is the Finsbury, at 1300mm. There are also a couple of longer models at 1800mm for our taller customers. It’s really worth visiting one of our showrooms to hop into a bath and see what suits you… Here’s our best advice on the best bath for large and small spaces!

1 – A Freestanding Slipper Bath – 1700mm Long

Our Kensington 1700mm Freestanding Slipper bath is a very good choice for a larger space. Yes, it is the standard length, but because of its beautiful shape, it looks best in a larger space. The reason for this is to be able to appreciate the size and curves, and also to recline in the bath without feeling that it’s been positioned in a too-small space. Freestanding baths are shaped and sized in such a way that they can be literally the centre of attention in the bathroom! Also, in 1370mm and 1500mm for smaller rooms.

2 – A Brand New Freestanding 1700mm Bath

The stunning Soho 1700mm Freestanding bath in Transparent Black is an outstanding choice for a larger space. It’s also available in Transparent Red for anyone who wants to make even more of a design splash! The Soho, at 1700mm L and 800mm W at its maximum width, is another ‘statement’ model that will define an ultra-contemporary design scheme. We think that Soho is likely to become a popular choice for new bathrooms – it’s 580mm H all the way around and is just 20mm thick, making it a very refined shape.

The space is styled with a low wooden stool, indoor plant, abstract framed artwork, and minimalist decor placed on a slim floating shelf.

3 – A Smaller Scale Freestanding Bath at 1500mm

If you’re absolutely positive about including a freestanding bath but have to design it into a smaller space, consider going for a model such as our Barnet Fluted Freestanding Bath, which is available as a 1500mm L model. Although it’s shown in a rather large showroom space here, its straight sides mean that it’s a very worthy contender for a smaller room layout. The overall dimensions are 1500mm L x 750mm W. And… if you want to save a bit of floor space, it’s also available as a back-to-wall model. Definitely a win-win solution!

4 – A Corner Bath Is a Space-Saver

Make the most of any size bathroom with a corner bath which tucks snugly into the corner, without any need for taking up extra floor space for a freestanding/central position. The corner idea also means that a shower screen can easily be included in the design, potentially removing the need for a separate shower enclosure. At the very least, adding an over-bath shower makes the room much more useful! Our Oakham 1700mm Space Saving bath comes in Left or right-handed versions to suit your layout, and is shown here with the Fiji Easy Clean Fluted Brushed Brass Bath Screen, which is 800mm wide.

5 – A Shorter Corner Shower Bath Option

Another double-duty shower-bath option is our Hereford 1600mm L x 700mm W square shower bath – it’s a more compact size than regular 1700mm length baths, but that 100mm difference could have a big impact in a smaller bathroom. It’s also available in an even more compact 1500mm L and the standard 1700mm L. It could enable a storage cabinet to be included, for example, or for a vanity unit to be installed, rather than a pedestal basin. Get the tape measure out to check your available floor space – because if you want a longer bath, this one is also available in 1800mm length.

6 – Where Extra Width is Needed – Go for a P-Shape Bath

Your new bathroom layout may be dictated by the length of the bath, but that doesn’t necessarily exclude you from going for a P-shape bath, which has a slightly wider ‘foot’ section. This is intended to create more space for an over-bath shower, but it also makes the bath feel more comfortable and spacious. This is our 1600mm L P-Shaped bath, which is also available in 1700mm and 1500mm lengths. Maximum width at the curved end is 850mm. Right or left-handed versions are available.

7 – A Compact 1300mm Freestanding

If you are set on the idea of a freestanding, classic-style bath, but it needs to slot into a smaller bathroom, consider our Finsbury 1300mm L Freestanding bath. This model can be set against a wall and paired with wall-mounted taps, which enhance that ‘freestanding’ effect, even if it is against a wall. Its straight-up sides and simple lines make it a good choice for more compact spaces. It’s 720mm wide, and where more space is available, it also comes in 1700mm and 1500mm lengths. It can also be teamed with a freestanding tap set, such as our Trent or Severn designs.

The space is styled with matt black wall-mounted taps, a textured stone side table with accessories, a small black stool, and light grey herringbone floor tiles.

8 – A Smaller-Scale Slipper Bath

Our Richmond 1370mm Freestanding Slipper Bath is yet another design that can be chosen to enhance both smaller and larger spaces. There are a couple of things to take into account when drawing up your floor plan, though… A slipper bath is intended to be used one-way only, with the taller end as the head rest, and it will also need to be paired with a set of freestanding taps, so make sure floor space and plumbing connections can be suitably positioned. Also in 1500mm L and 1700mm L.

The scene is styled with a black floor-mounted tap, a small black stool holding a plant and glass of wine, candles, and an open magazine for a spa-like ambiance.
